En el Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), en el borde del Parque Nacional de Taburiente, a 2.396 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en el municipio de Garafía (La Palma), se encuentra uno de los mayores conjuntos de telescopios del mundo.

Debido al cielo de La Palma, este observatorio goza de unas condiciones excepcionales para la investigación astronómica, por lo que sigue atrayendo a los telescopios gigantes del futuro, así como a la nueva generación de telescopios Cherenkov, diseñados para estudiar el Universo en rayos gamma de muy alta energía.

En la actualidad, el sitio alberga el mayor telescopio óptico-infrarrojo del mundo, junto con otros veinte telescopios e instrumentos para diversos tipos de estudios, como las observaciones nocturnas, la observación robótica, la física solar y la astrofísica de altas energías.

Con estos telescopios se han logrado grandes avances en el estudio del Universo, desde la detección de la galaxia más lejana hasta la confirmación de la existencia de agujeros negros y la expansión acelerada del Universo.
