Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson) is a priest accused of negligent homicide for the death of young Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter). This devout Catholic began having terrifying visions after attending college and decides to contact the priest, as she is convinced she needs an exorcism. Now, agnostic lawyer Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) decides to risk her reputation by helping Father Moore.

Moore, who wants to tell Emily’s story, gives his testimony when he is called to the witness stand. Bruner begins experiencing supernatural phenomena at home and wakes up at 3:00 a.m. to the smell of burning material. Moore warns her that she may be a target for demons, and reveals that he has also experienced similar phenomena the night he was preparing the exorcism. Bruner supports Moore by summoning anthropologist Sadira Adani to testify about the beliefs surrounding spiritual possession in various cultures, but Thomas rejects her claims as nonsense. Graham Cartwright, a doctor who attended the exorcism, gives Bruner a cassette tape on which the exorcism was recorded, and Moore presents the recording as evidence. Cartwright’s testimony to authenticate the exorcism and disprove the accusation is cut short when a car suddenly hits him, killing him. Bruner, distraught, retreats to her office, where her boss threatens her with dismissal if she allows Moore to testify again. Bruner visits Moore in his jail cell, where he convinces her to allow him to tell the rest of Emily’s story despite her boss’s threat.

I’ve been wanting to see this movie for a long time…and I finally got around to it. I had not seen this poster…the bloody picture of the actress who plays Emily always appears…and yet what is shown in this image is the important part of the film…at least from my point of view.

It is known that the storyline of this film is the trial of a priest, who performed an exorcism, for negligent homicide. It is based on a real event that took place in Germany…but that event simply inspired the film. It is far from a reflection of reality, and yet it serves to raise a lot of issues.

And the ironies that are presented,SPOILER: as the prosecutor does not believe in the possibility of possession, despite being a believer. On the other hand, the lawyer, first as a simple method of defense and little by little from what she sees and discovers in her dealings with the priest, begins to harbor a more than reasonable doubt on the subject.

It is true that everything is seasoned to achieve a “commercial” film, which makes it resort to some clichés … but they are the least. It is also true that when the ecclesiastical hierarchy is mentioned, it doesn’t seem to get off lightly…but it should be noted that the person who comments on these things is not exactly an impartial character or a reflection of honesty…which makes this point very nuanced.
