Completó su educación secundaria en Columbia Británica, donde se sabe que participó en eventos de boxeo y ajedrez durante esta época[10].

Se licenció en Economía y Ruso en la Escuela de Economía de Vancouver de la Universidad de Columbia Británica, y fue becado a la Universidad de Washington en Seattle[9]. Luego completó su doctorado en el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts, mientras seguía estudiando en la London School of Economics[9].
