“Farewell pigeon, alhaja, my consolation. Goodbye, will your wife see you again soon? How much, how much I long to give you a hundred billion kisses, very, very, very much. In the meantime, take them through this letter and be sure that she thinks only of you and loves you and the pigeons, your Balthasara”.

It is surprising to find these jumps from first to third person within the narrative of each letter, but perhaps this is due to the fact that this is secret correspondence not sent through official channels, but, as the letters reflect, through trusted persons of the spouses (some mentioned in the missives) who delivered them by hand to each of them, while informing each spouse of how they had seen and met the other. The fact that the author of the letters appears to be a person close to the monarch, but not the Queen herself, can be understood as an attempt to protect the identity of the writer in the event that these missives were intercepted by persons outside the marriage.
